Homeschooling is ‘elitist and anti-democratic’?

The recent ruling in California has gotten people talking about homeschooling. I have nothing but respect for parents that homeschool. I will definitely consider it as an option for my own children someday. Some of the stuff coming from the mouths of liberal elitists in the educational establishment is disgusting, particularly a recent editorial in the LA Times. Dana does a great job on her blog rebutting the mindless drivel (in fact, the authors may want to consider taking a class in persuasive writing from a homeschooling teacher), so give it a read if you get a chance.

Hey, thanks for the link! That editorial was just a bit over the top, wasn’t it? I read through it several times looking for a single actual fact and all they had was random quotes they pulled off an internet forum.

Yeah, it was a truly pathetic example of the pot calling the kettle black. How could anyone who read that editorial come away with any other impression than that the authors were themselves elitist and anti-democratic?

You got me scared. I saw the “Homeschooling is elitist and anti-dem…” title in the blog feed. When I came here, I saw the “?”. Whew.

My wife homeschools our oldest 2 and everyone loves it. That California ruling has no weight. It won’t go anywhere.

PS: you this one I made a mistake

I will try to keep this brief and my blog is not up yet:

I graduated from Incarnate Word Academy, a private school, and I am working to earn a Ph.D. in Sociology and Political Science and a Minor in Economics, for now. If I go into law I will study Constitutional Law at Baylor or Harvard. I bring this all up because I would not have gotten where I am today if it were not for the great education of private schools. I went to public school for a short time in my life when I was younger but it has gotten worse in the years. Public schools are falling apart in America and I think we can all agree that this is true. However, what I want to know is how beneficial is home schooling for the child? I defend the right for people to be home schooled but what I am interested in is how will it help the child? You can’t tell me that a parent knows everything and can teach math, science, or even history as well as a professor who at least has a degree associated with that subject e.g. political science teacher can teach history. My argument is that if you want to home school then the states need to work with the parents to provide help where and when it’s needed. But I just don’t think that parents are qualified nor are some teachers and so both must be fixed.

Kyle, homeschooled children consistently score higher than children who attend public schools and on par with those who attend private schools. You need to look into the subject more before you start forming misguided opinions.

I personally know several families that have homeschooled their children, and in every case those kids have excelled in their college and working careers (at least the ones that are old enough). True, not every parent is qualified to teach every subject, but help is readily available when it is needed.
